Lao PDR is developing many new hydropower and irrigation dams, which are likely to cause both positive and negative impacts on rivers, aquaculture and floodplain fisheries. Information on existing reservoirs is scattered, incomplete and poorly documented.

The Mekong project on ‘Fisheries and Aquaculture Production in Reservoirs in Lao PDR’ (MK19) set out to synthesize, publish and disseminate what is known about fisheries and aquaculture in reservoirs in Lao PDR. It also aimed to carry out field surveys to quantify catches from several existing reservoirs and describe the types of aquaculture operations that can benefit in and downstream of reservoirs. The project’s overall aim was to provide better information on reservoir fisheries and aquaculture so that reservoirs will be planned and managed to provide a broader range of benefits, particularly to rural people living nearby.

MK19 was lead by the Mekong Development Centre, and partnership with the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (Lao PDR), and the Faculty of Agriculture, National University of Laos.
